by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 104.19

kṣetrāṇi saṃyama kevalāni divyaṃ mānuṣaṃ yaṃ ca brāhmaṃ kṣetraṃ |
sa sarvamūlakṣetrabandhanāt pramukto kṣetrajño tāyi pravuccati tathatvā || 19 ||

He who has control over all fields, of devas, of men and of Brahma, and is freed from every bond that lies at the root of the fields, such an one is truly called a knower of the field. (19)
