Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 103.30

स पात्रपाणी विचरेया अमूगो मूग्संमतो ।
तं तं दानं न निंदेया दातारं नावजानिया ॥ ३० ॥

sa pātrapāṇī vicareyā amūgo mūgsaṃmato |
taṃ taṃ dānaṃ na niṃdeyā dātāraṃ nāvajāniyā || 30 ||

He will wander alone with his bowl in his hand, not dumb, though he seem to be so. He will not scorn a gift whatever it is, nor slight the giver. (30)
