by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 103.28

ततो रात्रिविवासातो ग्रामं पिण्डाय ओतरे ।
आह्वयं नाभिनन्देय अभिहारं च ग्रामतो ॥ २८ ॥

tato rātrivivāsāto grāmaṃ piṇḍāya otare |
āhvayaṃ nābhinandeya abhihāraṃ ca grāmato || 28 ||

Then at dawn he will go down to the village to beg for alms. He will not indulge in loud begging nor rejoice in what the village offers. (28)
