by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 103.22

मौनेयं च पृच्छसि नाल दुःकरं दुरभिसंभुणं ।
हन्त ते तं च वक्ष्यामि संस्तम्भस्व दृढो भव ॥ २२ ॥

mauneyaṃ ca pṛcchasi nāla duḥkaraṃ durabhisaṃbhuṇaṃ |
hanta te taṃ ca vakṣyāmi saṃstambhasva dṛḍho bhava || 22 ||

The state of a sage that you ask about, O Nala, is hard and difficult to attain. But come, I’ll tell you what it is. Be steadfast and strong. (22)
