Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 103.10

दृष्ट्वान लोकार्थचरं महर्षिं महायशं काश्यप अर्थदर्शिं ।
+ + + सर्वस्य शुभस्य मूलं शीलं रक्ष्यामो चमरीव बालं ॥ १० ॥

dṛṣṭvāna lokārthacaraṃ maharṣiṃ mahāyaśaṃ kāśyapa arthadarśiṃ |
+ + + sarvasya śubhasya mūlaṃ śīlaṃ rakṣyāmo camarīva bālaṃ || 10 ||

Now that we have beholden the great Seer who lives for the sake of the world’s welfare, the greatly glorious Kashyapa, who has insight into the good, who is the root of all that is fair, we will guard our morality and keep it serene like the young moon. (10)
