Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 100.38

एतेहि धर्मेहि त्रिहि यो उपेतो संमोदको सखिलो श्लक्ष्णवाचो ।
सगारवो सप्रतीशो हिरीमां तथाविधं व शिरि न जहाति ॥ ३८ ॥

etehi dharmehi trihi yo upeto saṃmodako sakhilo ślakṣṇavāco |
sagāravo sapratīśo hirīmāṃ tathāvidhaṃ va śiri na jahāti || 38 ||

Whoso is endued with these three qualities, is cheerful, gracious, kindly of speech, respectful, reverential and modest, good fortune never deserts such a man. (38)
