by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 100.36

सर्वाणि अर्थानि पुनर् विनश्यन्ति कालागतं च न प्रयाति अर्थं ।
न चात्महेतो . . विधं चरेया तथाविधं प्रज्ञावन्तं वदेमि ॥ ३६ ॥

sarvāṇi arthāni punar vinaśyanti kālāgataṃ ca na prayāti arthaṃ |
na cātmaheto . . vidhaṃ careyā tathāvidhaṃ prajñāvantaṃ vademi || 36 ||

Whoso, though all his wealth be lost, does not seek worldly gain, and, for his own selfish ends, does not live a life of wrong-doing, such a man do I call a wise man. (36)
