by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 100.7

अथाब्रवीच् छरभंगो तपस्वी समागता ऋषयो + + + ।
न साधुरूपं कृतं दण्डकीना गच्छाम वत्सस्य करोम पूजां ॥ ७ ॥

athābravīc charabhaṃgo tapasvī samāgatā ṛṣayo + + + |
na sādhurūpaṃ kṛtaṃ daṇḍakīnā gacchāma vatsasya karoma pūjāṃ || 7 ||

Then did the ascetic Sharabhanga speak to the assembled seers, “Not seemly was this thing which Dandakin did. Let us go and do honour to Vatsa.” (7)
