This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 98.4

तस्यासि परिवितर्को श्रुतं मया सागरो मृतकुणपेन ।
न संवसति लवणसलिलो तिमिमकरनिषेवितो रजनीं ॥ ४ ॥

tasyāsi parivitarko śrutaṃ mayā sāgaro mṛtakuṇapena |
na saṃvasati lavaṇasalilo timimakaraniṣevito rajanīṃ || 4 ||

And this reflection came to him; “I have heard it said that the sea, in which this monster fish lives, will not brook a dead body for a single night. (4)
