Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 97.7

मनोरथशतान अहं प्रदाता सदेवमनुजे सदृशो न मे स्ति ।
प्राणां त्यजिष्यं तव कारणाय मा मे प्रवादो वितथो भवेया ॥ ७ ॥

manorathaśatāna ahaṃ pradātā sadevamanuje sadṛśo na me sti |
prāṇāṃ tyajiṣyaṃ tava kāraṇāya mā me pravādo vitatho bhaveyā || 7 ||

I was a giver of a hundred desirable things. None like what I was is there among devas or men. Because of you, I will forfeit my life, lest my fame be other than the truth. (7)
