Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 91.38

रक्तो ह्य् अर्थं न जानाति रक्तो धर्मं न पश्यति ।
अन्धतमस् तदा भवति यं रागो सहते नरः ॥ ३८ ॥

rakto hy arthaṃ na jānāti rakto dharmaṃ na paśyati |
andhatamas tadā bhavati yaṃ rāgo sahate naraḥ || 38 ||

The impassioned man knows not what is good, nor does he perceive dharma. A man always becomes blind when passion overcomes him. (38)
