by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 90.86

śokasya mūlaṃ parikhanya sarvaṃ sarvaṃ prahāya bhavalobham āpsye |
arthasya prāptiṃ hṛdayasya śāntiṃ dhyānānuyukto sukhasārabuddhiḥ |
tasmāj jane na karomi sākhyaṃ sākhyaṃ na saṃvidyate tena asme || 86 ||

Nay, the whole root of grief have I dug out; all greed for life have I abandoned, and I shall win the goal of my endeavour, the peace of my heart. Devoted to meditation, aware of true happiness, I thus cannot make friends with man; there can be no friendship between him and me. (86)
