Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 90.83

अञ्ञाय धर्मं अवितर्कध्यायी नो रज्यते नो सरतीह थीनं ।
एवंविहारी बहुलीह भिक्षु पंचोघतीर्णो तरतीह षष्टं ॥ ८३ ॥

aññāya dharmaṃ avitarkadhyāyī no rajyate no saratīha thīnaṃ |
evaṃvihārī bahulīha bhikṣu paṃcoghatīrṇo taratīha ṣaṣṭaṃ || 83 ||

Knowing the dharma and meditating without applied thought he is not excited by passion nor harbours slothful memories. Abiding and applying himself thus the monk who has crossed the five floods crosses the sixth. (83)
