Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 90.78

ये च अचपला अनुद्धता च अमुखरा अभू अकीर्णवाचा ।
सुसखिलवाचा न मानुपेता जिनवरवर्ण श्रुणित्व तुष्ट भोन्ति ॥ ७८ ॥

ye ca acapalā anuddhatā ca amukharā abhū akīrṇavācā |
susakhilavācā na mānupetā jinavaravarṇa śruṇitva tuṣṭa bhonti || 78 ||

And those who are constant and humble, and are not scurrilous and loose of talk, but are kindly of speech and not given to pride, all will be glad when they hear of the beauty of the noble Conqueror. (78)
