by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 89.69

सा अश्रुपूर्णनयना यशोधरा धर्मवेगसंजातं ।
पुत्रं स्वं राहुलशिरिं अपगतकेशशिरं दृष्ट्वान ॥ ६९ ॥

sā aśrupūrṇanayanā yaśodharā dharmavegasaṃjātaṃ |
putraṃ svaṃ rāhulaśiriṃ apagatakeśaśiraṃ dṛṣṭvāna || 69 ||

Then Yashodhara’s eyes welled with tears when she saw her noble son Rahula bereft of his hair through his eagerness for the dharma. (69)
