by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 89.58

वारणचकोरनयनं माता पुत्रं विशालताम्राक्षं ।
उत्संगे स्थापयित्वा इमाहि गाथाहि अध्यभाषि ॥ ५८ ॥

vāraṇacakoranayanaṃ mātā putraṃ viśālatāmrākṣaṃ |
utsaṃge sthāpayitvā imāhi gāthāhi adhyabhāṣi || 58 ||

His mother then took into her lap her son whose wide dark eyes were like the elephant’s or the partridge’s, and spoke to him in these verses. (58)
