by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 89.47

रथयुग्ययानयोजनं समाचितं शिरिये विय पश्यन्ति ।
पुनः अश्रुपूर्णनयना राज्ञो अन्तःपुरिका दुःखिता ॥ ४७ ॥

rathayugyayānayojanaṃ samācitaṃ śiriye viya paśyanti |
punaḥ aśrupūrṇanayanā rājño antaḥpurikā duḥkhitā || 47 ||

Soon, the king’s women are distressed, and their eyes fill with tears when they see the gathered chariots, horses and carriages stretching over a yojana as though in a display of splendour. (47)
