by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 89.15

कामं खु मह्यं कायं शाक्या वद्धपट्टिकायं पाटेन्सुः ।
न शक्यं राहुलशिरिस्य स्वकस्य पुत्रस्य नाख्यातुं ॥ १५ ॥

kāmaṃ khu mahyaṃ kāyaṃ śākyā vaddhapaṭṭikāyaṃ pāṭensuḥ |
na śakyaṃ rāhulaśirisya svakasya putrasya nākhyātuṃ || 15 ||

“I would rather that the Shakyans tear my body in strips, than that I should forbear to tell my own son, the noble Rahula. (15)
