by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 88.18

yāvanti prāṇanayutā vinayeyaṃ loke tāvanti kalpanayutāṃ narake vaseyaṃ |
taṃ duḥkhaṃ tāvaciram udvahituṃ samarthaḥ sarvajñatāya praṇidhiṃ na nivartayeyaṃ || 18 ||

“Had I to spend in the world nayutas of lives and live for an equal number of nayutas of kalpas in hell, I could bear all this affliction for however long ere I would forswear my vow to win omniscience. (18)
