by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 88.14

śaraśaktivarṣaṃ yadi varṣayi tīkṣṇadhāraṃ sarvaṃ śarīraṃ yadi chijjati taṃ aśeṣaṃ |
tad duḥkhaṃ tādṛśakam udvahituṃ samarthaḥ sarvajñatāya praṇidhiṃ na nivartayeyaṃ || 14 ||

“If there rained upon me a shower of sharp arrows and knives, if every inch of my body were pierced thereby, such affliction could I bear, ere I would forswear my vow to win omniscience. (14)
