by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 88.8

śakrāsanaṃ yadi bhave mama nityakālaṃ sarvaiś ca kāmaratibhiḥ na ca viprayogaṃ |
na tv eva kāmaguṇasaukhyanibaddha buddhi sarvajñatāya praṇidhiṃ na nivartayeyaṃ || 8 ||

Sarvamdada replied, “If Shakra’s throne were for ever mine and were I never parted from any pleasure of sense, even then my mind would not be fixed on the comfort of the pleasures of sense, and I would not forswear my vow to win omniscience. (8)
