This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 87.82

यदा हि अग्रा आख्याता लोकस्मिं भोन्ति क्षत्रिया ।
तदा क्षत्रियकुले बुद्धा उत्पद्यन्ति नरोत्तमाः ॥ ८२ ॥

yadā hi agrā ākhyātā lokasmiṃ bhonti kṣatriyā |
tadā kṣatriyakule buddhā utpadyanti narottamāḥ || 82 ||

“For when nobles are reputed foremost in the world, then are the Buddhas, the Supreme of men, born in a noble family. (82)
