by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 86.17

न अस्ति ऊनं कामेहि हेठयिता न विद्यति ।
अमनुष्यवचनं श्रुत्वा कथं वर्तेम अन्यथा ॥ १७ ॥

na asti ūnaṃ kāmehi heṭhayitā na vidyati |
amanuṣyavacanaṃ śrutvā kathaṃ vartema anyathā || 17 ||

Naught is lacking to my pleasures. I know of no one who molests me. But I have heard a voice that is not of man. What other course is there for me? (17)
