Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 85.33

आयुं च वर्णं च मनुष्यलोके प्रहीयते मनुजानां सुगात्री ।
तेनैव वर्णेन धनं पि अर्ज्यं परिहीयसे जीर्णतरासि अद्य ॥ ३३ ॥

āyuṃ ca varṇaṃ ca manuṣyaloke prahīyate manujānāṃ sugātrī |
tenaiva varṇena dhanaṃ pi arjyaṃ parihīyase jīrṇatarāsi adya || 33 ||

In this world of men the beautiful woman is doomed to lose her age and her beauty. You should profit by your beauty, for already you are fading, already you are getting older. (33)
