Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 85.26

अल्पस्य इमं महाविपाको उपको अध्यगमे महान्तम् अर्थं ।
सुलब्ध लाभा खलु माणवस्य यो प्रव्रजे कामरतिं प्रहाय ॥ २६ ॥

alpasya imaṃ mahāvipāko upako adhyagame mahāntam arthaṃ |
sulabdha lābhā khalu māṇavasya yo pravraje kāmaratiṃ prahāya || 26 ||

That is the great fruit of a little thing. Great profit has Upaka gained. Great is the well-won gain of the young brahman who has become a recluse and forgone the delight of sensual pleasures. (26)
