by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 85.23

काम जानामि ते मूलं संकल्पात् काम जायसे ।
न कामं कल्पयिष्यामि ततो मे न भविष्यसि ॥ २३ ॥

kāma jānāmi te mūlaṃ saṃkalpāt kāma jāyase |
na kāmaṃ kalpayiṣyāmi tato me na bhaviṣyasi || 23 ||

O desire, I know thy root; thou art born of the wish. I will no more wish for thee; then wilt thou not survive. (23)
