Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 79.10

श्रुत्व च व्याकरणं असुराणां तुष्ट उदग्रो सदेवकलोको ।
प्राणसहस्रशतानि बहूनि प्रस्थित तत्र अनुत्तरयाने ॥ १० ॥

śrutva ca vyākaraṇaṃ asurāṇāṃ tuṣṭa udagro sadevakaloko |
prāṇasahasraśatāni bahūni prasthita tatra anuttarayāne || 10 ||

When this proclamation about the Asuras was made, the world of devas and men became glad and exultant. And many a hundred-thousand beings then and there were established in the incomparable career. (10)
