This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 76.156

सो दानि शाणानि च पट्टकानि च रक्तानि वस्त्राणि द्रुमत्वचानि ।
धारेसि तं च अजुगुप्समानो इदं पि ते आश्चरियं भदन्त ॥ १५६ ॥

so dāni śāṇāni ca paṭṭakāni ca raktāni vastrāṇi drumatvacāni |
dhāresi taṃ ca ajugupsamāno idaṃ pi te āścariyaṃ bhadanta || 156 ||

But now thou dost wear sackcloth and garments made of strips of red bark, and dost not abhor them.’Tis passing strange that this should be so, Sir.” (156)
