by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 76.108

प्रव्रजितस्मिं कुमारे अनुव्रतो स्य पुरोहितकुमारो ।
नामेन सोमदत्तो अनुप्रव्रजेसि मतिसारं ॥ १०८ ॥

pravrajitasmiṃ kumāre anuvrato sya purohitakumāro |
nāmena somadatto anupravrajesi matisāraṃ || 108 ||

When the prince had thus taken to the religious life, out of devotion to him the son of the household priest, named Somadatta, went forth from home after Matisara. (108)
