This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 76.103

बद्धस्य कथं मुक्तो वचनेन काराध्वम् अभिक्रमेय ।
विषमस्थस्य समागमं कथं स्पृहेया नरो विज्ञो ॥ १०३ ॥

baddhasya kathaṃ mukto vacanena kārādhvam abhikrameya |
viṣamasthasya samāgamaṃ kathaṃ spṛheyā naro vijño || 103 ||

“Why should a man who has been set free take the road back to prison at the bidding of one who is still in bondage? Why should a wise man hanker after the company of one who is on the wrong road? (103)
