by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 76.55

यस्य यस्यैव वृक्षस्य मूले तिष्ठति गौतमो ।
सो सो मुंचति पुष्पाणि ओनमित्वा द्रुमोत्तमो ॥ ५५ ॥

yasya yasyaiva vṛkṣasya mūle tiṣṭhati gautamo |
so so muṃcati puṣpāṇi onamitvā drumottamo || 55 ||

Whatever tree Gotama stood beneath put forth its flowers and bent under their weight, a tree beyond compare. (55)
