by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 75.41

घट्टपरिमृष्टक अन्तो मरुभवने वासवस्य वा भवनं ।
भवनानि राक्षसीनां नभाग्रसंस्थानि तिष्ठन्ति ॥ ४१ ॥

ghaṭṭaparimṛṣṭaka anto marubhavane vāsavasya vā bhavanaṃ |
bhavanāni rākṣasīnāṃ nabhāgrasaṃsthāni tiṣṭhanti || 41 ||

Emerging from the fair grove the merchants caught sight of the abodes of the Sirens, glistening like frost, like unto the abodes of the Suras thronged by Apsarases. (41)
