This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 75.23

किं शक्य निरालम्बे मध्ये समुद्रस्य लवणतोयस्य ।
कर्मं मनसीकरेन्ता अशोचमानेहि वस्तव्यं ॥ २३ ॥

kiṃ śakya nirālambe madhye samudrasya lavaṇatoyasya |
karmaṃ manasīkarentā aśocamānehi vastavyaṃ || 23 ||

“Happy are they who can foregather with their kith and kin, though it be to dwell with them but for one night, and then die. (23)
