by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 75.10

अपरो परं वधित्वा आलंबति जीवितस्य अर्थेन ।
न हि मृतकुणपेन सह लवणजलधरो वसति रात्रिं ॥ १० ॥

aparo paraṃ vadhitvā ālaṃbati jīvitasya arthena |
na hi mṛtakuṇapena saha lavaṇajaladharo vasati rātriṃ || 10 ||

Others killed their fellows, that, hanging on to their bodies, they might save their own lives. For the salt sea cannot long abide a dead body. (10)
