by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 74.6

समयो खु धर्मं चरितुं नरकिन्नरा सुरासुरसुचरा पि ।
कामरतीभिर् लोलिता अतृप्तमनसा गता विलयं ॥ ६ ॥

samayo khu dharmaṃ carituṃ narakinnarā surāsurasucarā pi |
kāmaratībhir lolitā atṛptamanasā gatā vilayaṃ || 6 ||

It is time to live by dharma. For men and Kinnaras, Suras and A suras, will, though they live, if they have coveted the joys of the senses, go to destruction unsatisfied. (6)
