by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 74.4

अचिरं मुनिसा सर्वे अतृप्ता कामलोलुपाः ।
व्यस्तगात्रा गमिष्यन्ति मृता भस्मपरायणाः ॥ ४ ॥

aciraṃ munisā sarve atṛptā kāmalolupāḥ |
vyastagātrā gamiṣyanti mṛtā bhasmaparāyaṇāḥ || 4 ||

Ere long all these poor devotees who indulge in sensual pleasures will have to leave their bodies unsatisfied, and die. And their end will be ashes. (4)
