by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 67.102

विक्षेपो तव चित्तस्य यं अनिच्छन्तिम् इच्छसि ।
अकामां राज कामेसि नैतत् पण्डितलक्षणं ॥ १०२ ॥

vikṣepo tava cittasya yaṃ anicchantim icchasi |
akāmāṃ rāja kāmesi naitat paṇḍitalakṣaṇaṃ || 102 ||

“You are out of your mind, since you desire one who does not desire you. O king, you are in love with one who loves you not. That is not the mark of a wise man.” (102)
