by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 67.5

काचित् जल्पन्तियो लोभेन्ति अपरा च हसन्तियो ।
अपरा च धावमाना उच्चावचम् अनुधावति ॥ ५ ॥

kācit jalpantiyo lobhenti aparā ca hasantiyo |
aparā ca dhāvamānā uccāvacam anudhāvati || 5 ||

Some chattered as they sought to allure, others laughed, and others ran about chasing all kinds of men. (5)
