Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 67.2

तस्य अभूषि चित्तं स्य तस्मिं काले महर्द्धिकं ।
यं नूनाहं स्त्रीयागारं ओसिरेयं त्रिः पक्षतः ॥ २ ॥

tasya abhūṣi cittaṃ sya tasmiṃ kāle maharddhikaṃ |
yaṃ nūnāhaṃ strīyāgāraṃ osireyaṃ triḥ pakṣataḥ || 2 ||

Then the happy thought occurred to him: “What if I were to let out the women of my harem three times a fortnight?” (2)
