by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 65.72

kiṃ garjase drumavarasmi sukhaṃ niṣaṇṇo na hi tāva paśyasiha yodhyasahasramāliṃ |
senāṃ piśācabahurākṣasayakṣasaṃghāṃ caturaṃginīṃ muditāṃ bahumantrayantrāṃ || 72 ||

“Why roarest thou as thou sittest at thy ease by the fair tree? For dost thou not yet see here, with their thousand warlike crests, the armed hordes of Pishacas, with many a Rakshasa and many a Yaksha, a glad host of four arms, equipped with many a magical device?” (72)
