Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.623

अयुक्तवाचं न कदाचि भाषे सुभाषितं भाषति नित्यकालं ।
अतृप्त सत्वा वचनेन तस्य यं सो प्रमुंचेद् वरम् एकवाचं ॥ ६२३ ॥

ayuktavācaṃ na kadāci bhāṣe subhāṣitaṃ bhāṣati nityakālaṃ |
atṛpta satvā vacanena tasya yaṃ so pramuṃced varam ekavācaṃ || 623 ||

Never shall he speak an irrelevant word, but he always utters the well-spoken speech. People cannot have enough of his speaking, (but are eager) that he should utter even but one fair word. (623)
