by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.610

बुद्धो च भोति सहसार्थवाहो अनन्ततेजेन मरुपूजनीयो ।
अलंकृतो भवति विशुद्धकायो यो चेतिये अपनये जीर्णपुष्पं ॥ ६१० ॥

buddho ca bhoti sahasārthavāho anantatejena marupūjanīyo |
alaṃkṛto bhavati viśuddhakāyo yo cetiye apanaye jīrṇapuṣpaṃ || 610 ||

He becomes a Buddha, a Caravan-leader in the world, to be honoured by dev as with infinite splendour. He who shall remove faded flowers from a shrine becomes adorned and pure in body. (610)
