by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.577

so jātamātro smare kalpān anantāṃ ye pūrvaṃ buddhā pūjita satkṛtā ca |
nāmaṃ ca teṣāṃ smarati gaṇaṃ ca dharmaṃ śodhetva stūpaṃ dvipadottamasya || 577 ||

He who has cleansed a tope of the Supreme Man, remembers, as soon as he is born, the Buddhas whom of yore he worshipped and honoured for infinite kalpas. He remembers their names, their number and their dharma. (577)
