Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.552

na jaḍo bhoti ajihvo kubjo na khaṃjo na pi vicchinnāṃgo viśiṣṭo bhoti |
pravarātmā bhoti pravarātmabhāvo vādetva vādyaṃ jinacetiyeṣu || 552 ||

He does not become stupid, nor a creature without tongue, nor hunchbacked, nor lame, nor crippled of limb. He who has played on an instrument of music at the Conqueror’s shrines becomes outstanding, most excellent of soul and most excellent of body. (552)
