by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.431

जातिस्मरश् च सो भोति न सो रागेन ह्रीयति ।
जानते दोषं कामानां ब्रह्मचर्यं समादिये ॥ ४३१ ॥

jātismaraś ca so bhoti na so rāgena hrīyati |
jānate doṣaṃ kāmānāṃ brahmacaryaṃ samādiye || 431 ||

He has a memory of former lives and is not carried away by passion. He understands the depravity of sensuous desires and takes to the holy life. (431)
