by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.366

शीलवां भोति अल्पार्थो अल्पकृत्यो गुणे रतो ।
समाधिं लभते क्षिप्रं स चापि प्रसादं गच्छति ॥ ३६६ ॥

śīlavāṃ bhoti alpārtho alpakṛtyo guṇe rato |
samādhiṃ labhate kṣipraṃ sa cāpi prasādaṃ gacchati || 366 ||

The moral man has few desires and few cares, but is content with virtue. He wins concentration quickly and goes on to win serenity. (366)
