Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.250

यावन्ति वृक्षा अभु मेदिनीये सर्वे अभू कुसुमानन्तगन्धाः ।
शून्या निमित्ता प्रणिधि विभाविता एवंस्वभावं वदते स शब्दं ॥ २५० ॥

yāvanti vṛkṣā abhu medinīye sarve abhū kusumānantagandhāḥ |
śūnyā nimittā praṇidhi vibhāvitā evaṃsvabhāvaṃ vadate sa śabdaṃ || 250 ||

And all the trees that grew on the earth blossomed with flowers of an infinitely pervading scent. “Empty are all external signs; my vow has been made clear.” Such was the spontaneous cry he made. (250)
