by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.226

समन्त त्रिंश स्फुट योजनानि यक्षसहस्रेहि महभैरवेहि ।
चतुर्दिशं चोपरि च नभातो ते यक्षसंघा परमसुघोररूपा ॥ २२६ ॥

samanta triṃśa sphuṭa yojanāni yakṣasahasrehi mahabhairavehi |
caturdiśaṃ copari ca nabhāto te yakṣasaṃghā paramasughorarūpā || 226 ||

Thirty yojanas all around swarmed with thousands of terrible Yakshas. Above in the sky, too, in all directions were Yakshas of most frightful aspect. (226)
