by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.204

न अस्ति सत्वो त्रिभवस्मि तात यो एवरूपो भवे पुण्यवन्तो ।
अदृश्यमानो यथ रस्मिराजो तथा निषण्णो मुनि बोधिमूले ॥ २०४ ॥

na asti satvo tribhavasmi tāta yo evarūpo bhave puṇyavanto |
adṛśyamāno yatha rasmirājo tathā niṣaṇṇo muni bodhimūle || 204 ||

“There is, father, no being in the three worlds who can be as virtuous as he. As the lord of light that can not be looked at, so is the Sage seated at the foot of the bodhi tree. (204)
