Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.184

शक्यं सहस्रा अयं लोकधातुः कल्पान कोटी धरितुं करेण ।
चित्तां च ज्ञातुं विविधा नराणां न संस्तरातो मुनिचालनाये ॥ १८४ ॥

śakyaṃ sahasrā ayaṃ lokadhātuḥ kalpāna koṭī dharituṃ kareṇa |
cittāṃ ca jñātuṃ vividhā narāṇāṃ na saṃstarāto municālanāye || 184 ||

“Thou couldst hold this system of the thousand worlds in thy hand for kotis of kalpas, and know the varied thoughts of men, more easily than thou couldst remove this sage from his couch. (184)
